Benefits Of L-Glutamine

Having hard some interesting stories about L-Glutamine, I was willing to try it myself. This was few years ago. Everything seemed perfect, unbelievable benefits and no negative side effects, which is what every supplement user is looking for. Considering the fact that I have been taking it for years, I believe I can do a full review on the actual side effects and benefits of L-Glutamine.

What Is L-Glutamine?

Many supplement companies and stores will do anything to present L-Glutamine as a fat burner or even a muscle builder. That is such a lie. Although used by body builders who work on regular basis, this product will not make you bigger or shed your fat at all. So, why is it still purchased supplement?

L-Glutamine is a consistent amino acid of most amino acids in skeletal muscle. Although involved in many functions that make our body work properly, it is considered to be ’’inessential’’. The reason for this is the fact that the body itself is able to produce sufficient amount of L-Glutamine.

There has to be something that makes such amino acid an ’’essential’’ part of supplementation. That is intensive physical training on a regular basis. By this, I mean weight training, intensive cardio training etc. During these activities our body craves for additional amount of L-Glutamine. This fact is what puts the L-Glutamine supplements on the store shelves.

The Benefits

Throughout bodybuilding community there is a widespread belief in multiple benefits. Some of them have proven to be wrong in my case, some have proven to be real, legitimate benefits. I will first clear out those blown-over-the-proportion benefits.

False Premises

To begin with, let’s first explain what Catabolism is. In laymen’s term, it is the breaking down of your muscle tissue. When you are trying to build muscles, this is something you want to avoid. Considering the fact that L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle, it was assumed to have anti-catabolic effect.

People who do a lot of cardio and weight training (as well as restrict their diet) in order to lose fat will lose some muscle mass in the process. That is inevitable. The idea was that by taking L-Glutamine they would prevent this muscle loss, due to its anti-catabolic effect. Well, it sounds better than it works in reality. Somewhere along studies and researches, a false premise was made about L-Glutamine muscle preserving effect on the body and it stuck with people.

Another false premise that has grown its roots deeply is that by taking more L-Glutamine in your body you can build bigger muscle. I assume that such premise comes from the relation L-Glutamine and muscle that we have already mentioned above.

Lack of relevant and trustworthy studies on L-Glutamine effects in physical training leaves room for wrong assumptions and false premises. Fitness magazines and supplement companies have been making loads of money thanks to misconceptions like these. When it comes to making profit, they will sell products which have no benefits. It is the fact of life. They even go to the point where they claim multivitamins can build muscle. Just so they could sell their products.

Just to underline it once again, taking L-Glutamine supplement in order to maintain muscle mass or build muscle will show no results. You will not have benefit of it at all.

The Proven Benefits

Having read my previous lines you must be thinking ’’Is L-Glutamine useful at all?’’. Although its benefits are not as miraculous as some advocate, this supplement has useful benefits and effects on the human body. I need to emphasize that these benefits are legit, proven by science and with real people.

Reduced muscle soreness and improved workout recovery are the benefits I am still taking this supplement for. Some people have said that they are less prone to catching cold or similar things. So it works as a sickness preventer.

Since I have been taking L-Glutamine supplements for years, I had enough opportunity to experiment with it. I wanted to see whether there are any differences in benefits and effects on my body. I intentionally stopped taking it and started again. From my experience, it helped with my muscle recovery. The soreness of muscles would subside or go away sooner.

I also believe it helped improve my immune function. To tell the truth, I have been on a healthy diet for some time, so that also contributes to maintaining strong immunity system. But look at it from this point of view… after intense workout regimes, your immune functions drop down a bit. Taking supplement which helps enhance immune system is a smart thing to do.
